Description: This book is a professional resource for K–8 educators that explains how to explicitly and systematically teach reading comprehension. Hennessy emphasizes that reading comprehension is complex and must be explicitly taught, rather than assuming students will naturally develop comprehension strategies simply by reading. The framework is aligned with the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy, and it connects to the language-comprehension strands of Scarborough's Reading Rope.
Objectives: Participants will take a deep-dive into the components of reading comprehension, and deepen the understanding they have of the components, including examining the roles of vocabulary, language, background knowledge, and text structures in comprehension, and explore how to use Hennessy’s Blueprint to plan explicit, evidence-based comprehension instruction. Participants will collaborate to reflect on current practices and identify actionable strategies for improving comprehension instruction.
