Validly and reliably identify children with or at risk of dyslexia
With the new State of Washington Dyslexia bill (SB 6162), a spotlight has been put on the importance of identifying and serving children with dyslexia. In this presentation, Dr. Carol Connor will discuss ways to validly and reliably identify children with or at risk of dyslexia, including assessment and multi-tiers systems of support – also known as response to intervention (RTI). Early identification will also be discussed since prevention is more effective than remediation. Once children have been identified, evidence-based interventions can prevent the most serious symptoms of dyslexia. This presentation will then discuss the kinds of interventions that can improve children’s reading skills including phonological awareness, language and comprehension.
About the speaker:
Carol McDonald Connor, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is a Chancellor’s Professor in Education at University of California, Irvine. Her research investigates individual child differences and the links between children’s language and literacy development with the goal of illuminating reasons for the perplexing difficulties children who are atypical and diverse learners, including children with dyslexia, have developing basic and advanced literacy skills. Most recently, her research interests have focused on how to individualize students’ learning opportunities in the classroom – from preschool through fifth grade and developing technology and interventions to improve teacher efficacy and students’ literacy, math, and science outcomes. Awarded the PECASE in 2008, she is also a fellow of AERA and APA. Currently, she is the principal investigator for studies funded by the US Department of Education, Institute for Education Sciences and the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development, including the Early Learning Research Network and the FCRR Learning Disabilities Research Center. She is also past Editor of the Journal for Research in Educational Effectiveness and Associate Editor for Child Development and for AERA Open.
